The awesome bread you didn’t know you could bake.
I know. A bread recipe on a finance focused site.
But I couldn’t help it. In my welcome email I reference the bread I would’ve baked if you came to visit me, and since I can’t serve you one in person, I wanted to give you the experience right in your own space. This bread can be made in your home, an RV or even camping! All you need is a dutch oven to create the crusty effect.
I’m not going to make you scroll and scroll through endless pictures to get to the ingredients. Let’s get to the meat of the matter.
Four ingredients to awesomeness.
3 CUPS FLOUR
Let’s keep it simple. Bread flour or all purpose -both work great! Just be sure it’s white.
1 TSP YEAST
Whatever you have on hand.
2 TSP KOSHER SALT
Please don’t use table salt. It will be too salty! If it’s all you have on hand, decrease to 1 tsp.
1 & 1/2 CUPS WATER
Warm is best!
Don’t wait until you actually want to consume it before you start, because time is an important factor in the quality of this bread.
In a bowl, stir together the first three ingredients thoroughly. If you want an herb bread, now’s the time to toss those herbs in! (Check out my favorite spice company here!)
Then slowly add water. 1- 1/2 cups is a good starting point, but I like wet shaggy dough and almost always increase it to 1 -3/4. Don’t over mix it! Just stir until all ingredients are combined and the dough sticks to the side of the bowl.
Cover with plastic wrap and leave it sitting for 6-24 hours. It will grow a little and get all bubbly looking.
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Once oven is hot, place a covered dutch oven in to heat for 30 minutes. While dutch oven is heating, turn the dough out on a floured surface and shape into a ball. Let it rest. Don’t over handle it to preserve those big holes inside when it’s cut.
Not much longer now.
When the dutch oven has heated in the hot oven for 30 minutes, carefully take it out, remove the lid, and simply plop the dough inside and cover again. Then place it back into the oven for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, remove the lid and bake uncovered for another 5-10 minutes until golden brown. The length of time will vary depending on your oven, so keep an eye on it while you get the butter out.
Cut a slice immediately, slather it all the way to the edge with butter and go back to browsing the articles on my site while you eat it. There – I just saved you $4 for a loaf like this from the store! Enjoy!
